Policy work

Some of the policy work I’ve done in the past years:

>>>> COUNCIL OF EUROPE

2016-2019 I was “academic expert” of the Council of Europe campaign “Free to Speak, Safe to Learn”, launched on the basis of report written for the Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland (see: report on counter-radicalisation in schools in the Council of Europe member states).

In 2015-2016 I was part of an initiative of the Council of Europe Secretary General on the effects of counter-radicalisation and counter-terrorism policies in the sector of education, with former UK Foreign Secretary Sayeeda Warsi (Output: Joint op-ed article, Report: Students as suspects, see media appearance and publications).

In 2014-2015 I worked as academic expert working on the Guidelines for Prison and Probation Services Regarding Radicalisation and Violent Extremism. http://bit.ly/2GgbNVV (Output: Guidelines & Academic Expert commentary, see publications) adopted by 47 member states.

In 2019-2020 I wronte an academic report for the Geens/EFA Party of the European Parliament, on the map of Biometric Mass Surveillance in the EU. You can read the report and consult the online interactive map here https://www.greens-efa.eu/biometricsurveillance/

From 2014-2019 I did several academic expert consultancies for the European Parliament, for the committees LIBE and TERR. I published three co-authored reports during this period: on the Return of Foreign Fighters (2018), the prevention of radicalisation (2014) and mass surveillance (2013)

In April 2014, I was invited as an expert hearing at the French Senate on the issue of mass surveillance. http://bit.ly/2Gm1qRX

In Jan 2017 I was invited as expert of probation service union (CGT Insertion Probation) in talks with central prison and probation administration (Direction de l’Administration Pénitentiaire, France).
